In the east of the Haute Vienne, Eymoutiers sits next to the river Vienne. Once a town of hide-tanners, many of the houses retain the original tanning lofts. The Romanesque church of St Etienne, the impressive Mairie and the Bibliotèque are just some examples of the beautiful architecture of the town and of this region.

Eymoutiers is well placed for all kinds of recreation. Just 15 minutes’ drive north east of the town is lac de Vassivière, which offers water sports, beaches and swimming. For those who enjoy walking, the Monédières which stretch across the countryside just south east of Eymoutiers, are the ideal destination. There are also a number of marked trails locally of between 9km and 15km.

A l’est de la Haute-Vienne, Eymoutiers a été construite au bord de la Vienne. Autrefois ville de tanneurs, elle a su préserver des anciens appartements de tannerie. L’église romanesque St Etienne, l’impressionante Mairie et la bibliothèque sont de parfaits exemples de l’architecture limousine.

Eymoutiers est très bien placée pour toutes sortes d’activités. A seulement 15 minutes en voiture se trouve le lac de Vassivière, il offre plages, baignades et sports aquatiques. Pour ceux qui aiment la marche, « Les Monédières » ,qui s’étendent à travers la campagne au Sud-Est d’Eymoutiers, sont une destination idéale. Il y a aussi un grand nombre de sites de randonnée entre 9 et 15 kilomètres.

The unspoilt region of the Limousin comprises three ‘departments’: Creuse, Corrèze and Haute Vienne. It is the ideal holiday destination for those who search for peace and quiet. Outdoor fans will enjoy a wealth of activities such as rambling, cycling, fishing, golf, rock climbing, canoeing and various other water sports. Although there are few large towns in the region, the countryside boasts some beautiful ancient villages and stunning architecture.

La Région limousine
Le limousin est une région qui a su préserver sa nature. Il comprend 3 départements : la Creuse, la Corrèze et la Haute-Vienne. C’est une destination idéale pour des vacances reposantes et calmes. Les plus sportifs pourront jouir d’un grand nombre d’activités comme la randonnée, le vélo, la pêche, le golf, l’escalade, le canöe et autres sports aquatiques. Bien que la région a quelques villes importantes, la campagne domine avec ses magnifiques et anciens villages d’une architecture incroyable.

Founded in 16 BC by the Roman Emperor Augustus, Limoges is the capital city of the Limousin. The city was originally two neighbouring cities which grew up separately over the centuries, not united until the French Revolution.

Fondée en 16 avant Jésus Christ par l’empereur romain Augustus, Limoges est la capitale du Limousin. La ville était à l’origine 2 villes voisines qui ont grandi séparemment pendant des siècles. Elles n’ont formé qu’une que pendant la Révolution Française.

One of the ancient cities is the area around the Cathedral of St Etienne called the Cité. The cathedral is surrounded by the grounds of the bishop’s palace and boasts some beautiful terraced gardens and a botanical collection overlooking the river Vienne. The ancient cobble-stoned lanes are well worth a visit where half-timbered buildings still stand strong.

L’une des anciennes villes, appelée la « cité », était autour de la cathédrale St Etienne, celle-ci est entourée par les terrains de l’évéché et possède de beaux jardins en terrasse et une collection botanique donnant vue sur la Vienne. Les ruelles faites de pavés et ses maisons avec poutres apparentes valent la peine du déplacement.

The second of the two original cities is much more extensive, although a lot harder to identify. The medieval structure is gradually being restored. This second city was the centre of political power, known as ‘the Château’ or the ‘Royal Town’.

La deuxième ville est beaucoup plus étendue et plus difficile à identifier. La structure médiévale est restorée petit à petit ; elle était le centre du pouvoir politique, connu comme « le château » ou « ville royale ».

Limoges is famous for its porcelain and enamels. Enamel-making began in the 12th century and still continues today. Since the 19th century, Limoges has been known world-wide for its fine porcelain. Today porcelain is a thriving industry and there are plenty of shops selling a wide range of porcelain in and around Limoges.

Limoges est renommée  pour sa porcelaine et émail. La fabrication de l’émail commença au XIIème siècle et continue toujours aujourd’hui. Depuis le XIXème siècle, Limoges est célèbre dans le monde entier pour sa porcelaine fine. Aujourd’hui elle est une industrie importante et il y a beaucoup de boutiques en vendant différentes sortes non seulement à Limoges mais aussi aux allentours.

This beautiful ancient town is set in the Correze department of the Limousin. The town has some wonderful old buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and is well worth a visit. Head to the centre of the town and park in the car park outside the tourist office. From here you can take a walk around the town following a trail taking in 15 buildings of interest.

Cette magnifique ville située en Corrèze a de merveilleux bâtiments datant du XVIème et XVIIème siècles. Allez directement au centre-ville et garez-vous près de l’office de tourisme. D’ici vous pourrez commencer votre promenade en suivant une piste de 15 bâtiments intéressants.

On Saturday 10th June 1944, a company of 120 SS soldiers sealed off the exits of the village of Oradour-sur-Glane and moved in. The officer in charge ordered the mayor of the town to assemble everyone on the Champ de Foire for an identity check.

Le samedi 10 juin 1944, une compagnie de 120 S.S boucla les sorties du village. Un officier ordonna au Maire de rassembler tout le monde sur le Champ de Foire pour une vérification d’identité.

The assembled villagers were separated – the women and children escorted to the church and the men told to stay, sit in three rows and face the wall while the troops continued to search all the buildings in the village. The men were then marched away in groups to stables and barns. The men were killed with machine-gun fire before the barns were set alight – the SS then moved on to the church to kill the women and children with grenades and machine-gun fire, before setting fire to the church. Only one person, a woman, managed to escape through the east window of the church.

Les villageois furent séparés : les femmes et les enfants dans l’église et les hommes mis en rang face au mur pendant que la troupe nazie continuait les recherches dans les maisons. Les soldats les ont ensuite éscorté aux écuries et granges où ils furent mitraillés et brûlés. Ils se dirigèrent après vers l’église pour massacrer les femmes et les enfants avec des grenades et mitrailleuses avant de tout incendier. Seulement une femme a réussi à s’échapper à travers une fenêtre de l’église

Before the troops moved out, they looted the houses of the village before torching the buildings. They left 642 dead.

Avant de quitter les lieux, les soldats ont pillé toutes les maisons. Ils laissèrent 642 morts.

Oradour-sur-Glane stands untouched and is a monument to the dead and a memory of the atrocity of 10th June 1944, as well as World War II. A new village was built next to the original village during the 1950s.

Oradour-sur-Glane est restée intacte depuis ces attrocités et un monument aux morts a été  élevé au nom des morts du village et de la deuxième guerre mondiale. Un nouveau village a été construit à côté en 1950.

The medieval town of St Leonard de Noblat is nearby, with it's colourful Saturday market. The ancient towns of Brive and Uzerche are well worth a visit. Brive is best explored on foot – the Syndicat d’Initiative offers circuits and guided tours. Uzerche stands proudly on the river bends of the Vézère. Mansions with turrets, steep narrow streets and beautiful views give Uzerche a special feel. Visitors are well catered for with good restaurants and services.

D’autres villes intéressantes
La ville médiévale de St Léonard de Noblat, proche de chez nous, est connue pour sa foire du samedi. Les anciennes villes de Brive et Uzerche sont aussi à ne pas manquer. Brive est surtout mieux visitée à pied ; le Syndicat d’initiative offre circuits et tours guidés. Uzerche se dresse fièrement sur le bord de la Vézère. Manoirs avec tourelles, rues étroites et vues immanquables donnent au visiteur des souvenirs inoubliables. Il y a aussi un grand choix de restaurants et services.

As one of the largest of the French lakes at over 1,000 hectares, Vassivière is an amazing site and could be described as a ‘miniature inner sea’. For those who enjoy water sports, Vassivière offers water-skiing, sailing, wind surfing as well as swimming. There are beaches to relax on, lake side walks and lake cruises with food, local music and dancing!

Avec ses 1000 hectares, il est le plus grand lac de France et un site très étonnant. Il pourrait être décrit comme « une mer miniature ». Pour ceux qui aiment les sports aquatiques, le lac de Vassivère offre ski-nautique, voile, planche à voile et baignade. Il y a des plages pour bronzer, des randonnées près de l’eau et « des petites croisières » avec repas, musique et dance.
